Host Edmonton Preview

by Cindy

You ready to eat, drink, think Edmonton? Because that’s what Host Edmonton is all about. The upcoming show will take place at Shaw Conference Center from May 22 to May 24, 2014, offering a combination of trade, food, drink, and educational seminars for ticket holders. I was invited to lunch for a peek of what the event will showcase, and a chance to listen to Kevin Brauch, host of the show Thirsty Traveler, or what I commonly associate him as, Alton Brown’s beloved Canadian floor reporter of Iron Chef America.

The lunch was graciously hosted by Hundred Bar & Kitchen, part of the Century Hospitality Group. Appetizers were served, along with some sliders and their signature perogies.

Every major city has some type of food conference highlighting food, drinks, and hospitality and not only for those in the food industry, but for anybody with a passion for food and delivering great hospitality. Think of when you host a party. It’s not only about the food and the drinks, but also how you host your guests. With Edmonton’s growing food culture, it’s about time that we have a show for it! Hopefully it becomes an annual event! This year, the event line up includes:

  • Host Kick-Off: A launch party on Thursday May 22, featuring tastings of the best local drinks and eats (sampling tickets for sale at the event), a live musical act (TBA) and DJ (TBA).
  • Clash of the Cocktails: Participating venues will be making cocktails the week prior, based on a list of approved spirits and ingredients, which come Saturday night, a winner will be announced.
  • Keynote Sessions: Watch Christine Cushing, Kevin Brauch, Marc Murphy, Bal Arneson, and TJ Schier teach you their expertise from cooking, wines and spirits, and business aspects of the industry. Celebrities galore!
  • Prud’homme Beer Certification: A two-day session led by Roger Mitag, where upon completion, you will be a certified level one, “Beer Enthusiast”! Think wine sommelier, but for beer! Participants will learn about brewing ingredients, brewing processes, history, tasting concepts, draught system basics, and more. Sounds cool!
  • Pairing Dinners: Local venues will prepare meals of local ingredients and paired with beverages from a featured winemaker or brewery.
  • Fine Wine Gala: Sample the best premium spirits, fine wines, and champagnes ranging from the $50 to $300 bottle range. Great for those who have always wanted to try a high-end bottle but didn’t want to commit. Yay for tastings!
  • Brain Food: Demos, tips, and insights from the industry professionals, including Philip Duff (bartending guru), Kevin Brauch, Edmonton’s own Brad Smoliak (owner of KITCHEN) and Mary Bailey (publisher of The Tomato Food and Drink), and many, many more.

It was a great opportunity to listen to Kevin Brauch, he’s hilarious! And even a greater opportunity to taste his newest creation made in his Westin Hotel room, the Saskatoon Berry DeLorean. Having seven interviews earlier that morning, and more to come that day, his energy was unwavering and his passion for all things food, drink, and service was outstanding. Thank you to Host Edmonton and Enterprise Edmonton for the invite and to Hundred Bar & Kitchen for the eats! More details on Host Edmonton can be found on their website, and follow their Facebook and Twitter page for updates. Tickets are on sale now, and if you buy before March 17, you get 15% off with the promo code “HOST2014”. Tickets can be bought for the entire weekend or per event or day. Get going foodies!
